A crown is a type of dental restoration used to repair a tooth that has been damaged due to decay, fracture, or wear. Crowns cover the entire visible surface of your damaged tooth, which helps restore its appearance and function.
Crowns are generally made and placed over the course of two appointments: the first to prepare the tooth and the second to cement the crown in place. At our practice, we use a CEREC machine to create and place dental crowns in a single appointment.
CEREC is a new technology that uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology to create crowns. CAD/CAM technology allows our dentist to scan your teeth and design a crown for a precise fit. The restoration is designed from a solid block of ceramic or resin material. It is then milled using CAM technology.
How Are CEREC Crowns Created?
CEREC crowns are unique because they can be custom-crafted and placed in just one visit to the dentist’s office. Our dentist in Sheboygan will prepare your tooth by removing damaged areas and reshaping it to fit the cap. Once we have created a space for the crown, we will use a special 3D scanner to capture images of your tooth.
The images are then sent to a computer that can design your crown to perfectly fit your smile. After the design is complete, the information is sent to a machine that will craft your custom crown out of strong ceramic material. Finally, our dentist will place the crown over your tooth and secure the restoration in place.
What Are the Advantages of CEREC Crowns Over Traditional Crowns?
The CEREC crown procedure is much more comfortable for the patient than the traditional one. Traditional crowns are fabricated in a separate office and require messy impressions, a temporary crown, and a second appointment to place the crown. With CEREC, patients leave our office with their permanent crowns the same day they come in for their procedure!
The entire process is quick and painless and only takes an hour in our Sheboygan dental office. When a patient has a chipped tooth or needs a cosmetic fix for a tooth that is misshapen, a crown can be a great option. Using advanced CAD/CAM technology, we design and create your dental crown in just one visit!
Our dentist will examine your teeth to make sure you have the proper amount and type of enamel to support a dental crown. If so, we are able to design a crown that matches your smile perfectly. Your new crown will be designed to look just like a natural tooth, blending in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
