Dental Implants in Sheboygan, WI

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots fabricated from titanium. These metal rods are surgically inserted into the jawbone to provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth. The implants serve the same purpose as natural tooth roots, which is to anchor the visible portions of your teeth to your jaw.

Once the bone has grown around and adhered to the implant, an artificial tooth restoration can be attached. The result is a fully functional and natural-looking smile!

How Do Dental Implants Work?

The dental implant itself is a tiny titanium post shaped like a screw that is designed to replace the root of your missing tooth or teeth. A biocompatible metal alloy piece is placed on top of the implant to act as an abutment and hold the dental crown in place.

Dental implants are an excellent long-term solution for missing teeth because they look like natural teeth and can last a lifetime when cared for properly. Patients should see our dentist in Sheboygan, WI, every three to four months for routine cleanings and examinations to ensure their implants stay in good shape.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone and gum tissue, giving the prosthetic tooth the support it needs to stay stable and in place. The implant post is made from titanium and acts as an artificial root for the implanted tooth. It’s inserted into the jawbone, where it will fuse with the bone. This fusion process can take several months to complete, but once it is complete, the implant will be just as stable as natural teeth.

After an implant is placed, a healing cap is placed on top to allow the gums to heal around the edge of the implant. During this time, we will likely recommend a soft food diet and painkillers as needed to manage the discomfort of the healing process.

After the gums have healed, we will place a temporary restoration on the dental implant. This will be a custom-crafted dental crown or bridge that replaces your missing or damaged teeth. The final restoration will be placed on the implant once the implant has completely fused with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

In most cases, this process takes anywhere from three to six months. Once complete, the final restoration can be placed onto the dental implant.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Before recommending dental implants, our Sheboygan dentist will need to fully examine your mouth to make sure that you are healthy enough for the procedure. You’ll need to have enough bone mass in your jaw for the implant to integrate properly with the bone.

If you lack sufficient bone mass, our dentist may recommend a bone grafting procedure to build up your jawbone before placing your dental implant. X-rays of your mouth and a thorough oral exam will help to determine if you qualify for treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are incredibly versatile and durable. They can be used to replace either a single missing tooth or an entire set of missing teeth. They are also much more comfortable than removable restorations like dentures because they do not need to be stabilized with messy adhesives or force fittings.

Patients love dental implants because they are a permanent solution for their missing teeth that leaves their mouths feeling healthy and whole again. With dental implants, patients can once again eat all of their favorite foods and show off a healthy, beautiful, radiant smile!
