Tooth Extraction in Sheboygan, WI

Tooth extraction, also known as tooth removal, is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons. Teeth may need to be extracted because they are impacted (stuck beneath the gum line or only partially erupted), broken in a way that cannot be fixed, or damaged by tooth decay.

How to Prepare for an Extraction Procedure?

Before our Sheboygan dentist can begin your tooth removal, you will need to have your teeth and gums cleaned thoroughly. If your mouth is full of bacteria or plaque, the dentist will not be able to properly perform your tooth extraction because the bacteria could enter the bloodstream and cause an infection.

Our dentist in Sheboygan may also take X-rays of your teeth and the surrounding bone and check your gum tissue during the consultation to help determine the best way to remove the tooth.

What Does the Tooth Extraction Procedure Entail?

The dentist will begin the procedure by numbing the area of your mouth where the tooth will be removed and, if needed, giving you an oral sedative that will cause you to feel relaxed. Then, the dentist will gently rock the tooth back and forth until it breaks free from the gums and ligaments holding it in place.

In some cases, a tooth may have to be extracted in pieces to make the procedure easier. In this case, stitches may be necessary to close the incision in the gum line.

What Happens After a Tooth Extraction Procedure?

After the tooth is removed, our dentist may place a few sutures if your gums are bleeding. Our dentist will likely prescribe painkillers for you to take after you leave the office. Do not drive yourself to and from the procedure if you are administered sedation medication. Ask a friend or family member to drive you home.

Once you’ve returned home, rinse your mouth with salt water and take all prescribed medications as directed. Avoid drinking through a straw for at least a week following the procedure.

Continue brushing your other teeth normally but avoid the area where the tooth was extracted. Use an ice pack to reduce swelling. Apply ice to the outside of your face over the treated area and be sure to stay hydrated and eat soft foods until you feel ready to return to your normal diet.
